Louis van Gaal hopes Phil Jones will get minutes for England
Louis van Gaal hopes to see Phil Jones in action for his country in the coming days as the Manchester United defender continues his journey back to full match fitness.Jones, who is joined in the England squad by Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick, made his comeback on the bench for the Capital One Cup win over Ipswich Town two weeks ago, having missed the start of the campaign due to mild thrombosis.
He has since made two more substitute appearances and van Gaal hopes the England international will get more important minutes under his belt during the Three Lions' upcoming matches against Estonia and Lithuania.
"I think it’s always an honour to play for your country," van Gaal told MUTV. "And, in our build-up of his condition in the games, he needs match rhythm, so I shall be very pleased when he plays for England because that helps him to get minutes for Manchester United. That’s important."
Jones himself is hoping to be involved in both games as he continues to further his Euro 2016 ambitions, but insists getting back in the United side for a run of games is his immediate concern.
"Playing for England is a huge honour, whenever you’re selected, and I want to be part of the squad and part of the Euros, but I know I have to maintain a good level of form and fitness for United to be able to do that," he said. "That’s my short-term focus."
