UNDER-21S: SUNDERLAND 0 UNITED 1

Tyler Reid came off the bench to score the only goal of the game as Manchester United's Under-21s triumphed 1-0 at Sunderland.
The defender, usually a right-back but playing on the left wing, raced clear to beat Vito Mannone with 15 minutes remaining to earn a splendid win for Warren Joyce's men against some experienced opponents.
The Black Cats, the runaway leaders of the division, piled on the pressure in the opening stages and should have taken an early lead. Mikael Mandron and Liam Agnew both failed to trouble Sam Johnstone as several chances were squandered.
George Brady looked like scoring an own goal when knocking the ball past Mannone but he recovered to clear, albeit while leaving the keeper with a bloodied face from the collision as Ashley Fletcher challenged. It proved a rare moment of danger for the hosts as Duncan Watmore was crowded out during a goalmouth scramble and Adam Matthews fired over the bar.
Watmore leaned in to intercept a James Weir pass on 38 minutes and was fortunate to survive a huge penalty shout while a run and cross by Fletcher forced Mannone into action at his near post. Back came the Wearsiders with Agnew blazing over after Guillermo Varela blocked a Lynden Gooch header and Watmore's header was comfortably saved by Johnstone following a Matthews cross.
Mannone had his first shot to save in the opening minute of stoppage time at the end of the half as he easily dealt with a long-range attempt by Matty Willock. The Reds provided more of a threat after the interval with Fletcher drilling an opportunity wide and Tim Fosu-Mensah failing to hit the target following a driving run.
Mandron and Watmore offered attempts for Sunderland while Brady made a last-ditch tackle to thwart United skipper Weir as he looked to break the deadlock with a positive run forward. On 75 minutes, Reid came up trumps by jabbing past Mannone after Fletcher appeared to flick on a long kick by Johnstone, although it may actually have come off a defender, and it proved decisive.
Johnstone saved a Watmore header and Tom Robson was booked for simulation late on when appealing for a penalty. Mannone went up for an injury-time corner and had a shot from outside the box charged down as the Black Cats failed to break down the resolute United defence, with the visitors holding out for a well-earned three points.
United: Johnstone; Varela, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson, Riley; Fosu-Mensah, Redmond, Willock (Reid 66); El Fitouri, Fletcher, Weir. Subs not used: O'Hara, Rothwell, Rathbone, Gribbin.
