BUTT ISSUES MESSAGE TO UNITED YOUNGSTERS
Nicky Butt admits he had some strong words for Manchester United's Under-19s after a disappointing 4-0 defeat to CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Youth League.
The youngsters have slipped three points behind the Group B leaders and need a positive response in the return fixture against the Russians at Leigh Sports Village on 3 November.
Butt felt the two penalties awarded against his side were harsh but was honest in his assessment of the heavy loss.
"They deserved to win today," he told MUTV. "They were better than us at all aspects of the game but we feel that, when we are on form, we can compete against the best teams.
"The result wasn’t great, obviously, and it wasn’t a great performance – it was very bad. We need to improve. It is a learning curve in this competition; it is difficult to get any time on the pitch but they need to play a lot better than that individually.
"Man for man, they were better than us at all aspects. We have three games to rectify that and learn from it. We have had a good chat about it, spoke some honest words and said it is not good enough for Manchester United players.
"You like to think you learn more from defeat. The question will answer itself in the next game we play. I don’t think we worked hard enough as a team, we made the wrong decisions individually and we conceded two penalties, which I don’t think were penalties, but you have to deal with that."
Conceding a second goal on the stroke of half-time to Aleksandr Makarov was particularly frustrating after a competitive first period.
"That didn’t help," said the Under-19s coach. "But that is part of the learning curve and game management. You should be looking at the clock and how long is left, playing in the right areas and stopping the game, if you like.
"You shouldn’t be conceding with one minute left, so that was disappointing, but there is a lot of disappointment – it was a really bad day, to be fair, and not one that we are too happy about."
