LINGARD WINS MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD AGAINST WEST BROM
Jesse Lingard was convincingly voted Manchester United’s Man of the Match after his starring role in the 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old stroked home a curling effort from outside the area seven minutes into the second half to break the deadlock and net his first United goal.
Lingard received 63 per cent of the vote from fans on @ManUtd, while Bastian Schweinsteiger and Chris Smalling polled 26 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.
It’s the second time this week Lingard has won the award; he was also named United's star man inTuesday’s victory over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.
United boss Louis van Gaal was full of praise for the winger during his post-match press conference, explaining: "I put him in the line-up in the first game of last season against Swansea City at home, because he had impressed me already. But he had a very heavy injury in that game, so he needed to rehabilitate and that takes a long time.
"I said at the beginning of the season that I wanted to keep him but he had to wait for the moment. He’s in better shape than his companions for the same position. Since he has been involved, he is playing incredibly well."
Fellow midfielder Juan Mata is also impressed by Lingard, telling MUTV: “It was a very, very good goal. We have seen him doing that in training almost every week. Jesse is a great guy and we are very happy for him. He has all the qualities you need to succeed at this club and we are happy for his first goal."
Defender Daley Blind added: "I’m very happy for him – he’s a good guy, he trains hard and it was a good goal."
